  12. PERSPICUITY IN PUNCTUATION.  Several painful compromises have been
  13. required to produce this network-safe ASCII version.  Somewhat against
  14. the spirit of SGML, I have used angle brackets to delimit entry
  15. numbers, both serially and as cross-references; any editor supporting
  16. regular-expressions can be used to convert these particular delimiters
  17. to conventional square-brackets. [Ed. note: This has been done to avoid
  18. conflict with HYPLUS - R. Muns] Likewise, the use of parentheses for
  19. square brackets in running text is infelicitous, where the latter more
  20. clearly signified (editorially) added text, and nested better within
  21. parenthesized expressions.  SGML character entities have been used to
  22. represent extended ASCII accented characters, for which I offer no
  23. apology: anyone wishing to print the bibliography on paper copy should
  24. first change out these entities (e.g., é, É, ü,
  25. à, ø, ç, č).

  27. Thus, with the exception of @ ("@" IRV 4/0 = decimal 64), I
  28. have restricted the character set to the 'safe' subset of (non-
  29. national-use) ISO 646 IRV characters, but at the risk of complete
  30. clarity in a few contexts.  According to network authorities, use of
  31. any characters outside the following 'safe' ISO 646 subset is
  32. dangerous, especially across national boundaries, since unanticipated
  33. and often undetectable instances of EBCDIC-ASCII translation during
  34. transmission will have mutagenic effects upon the 'non-safe' IRV/ASCII
  35. characters. This wisdom warns that the 'safe' ISO 646 subset contains
  36. ONLY the following (non national-use) characters:
